The James Bond franchise has found its new producing duo with Amy Pascal and David Heyman. This announcement comes after the departure of long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in a deal that was confirmed yesterday on 24 March. The new pair will now be responsible for driving production on the first James Bond film under Amazon MGM Studios.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman gave the following joint statement:

“James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. We are humbled to follow in the footsteps of Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson who made so many extraordinary films and honoured and excited to keep the spirit of Bond very much alive as he embarks on his next adventure.”

Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of Film, commented on the hiring:

“We are approaching every creative decision with James Bond, which Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have so masterfully steered, with the greatest sense of responsibility. Part of an elite group of producers who have developed and managed massive film franchises to box office success and critical acclaim, Amy Pascal and David Heyman are two of the most accomplished, experienced, and respected film producers in our industry. We are honoured to be working with them on James Bond’s next chapter and are excited to deliver to global audiences storytelling that upholds the impeccable legacy of this beloved character.”

According to Deadline, Amy Pascal is planning to produce the film via her production company Pascal Pictures, while David Heyman will similarly do it through Heyday Films. Pascal is best known amongst Bond fans for being the Head of Sony Motion Pictures during the productions of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and SPECTRE. Despite leaving the studio due to the fallout of the infamous Sony hacks, Pascal seems to have gained a lot of goodwill in Amazon’s eyes.

British producer David Heyman also comes with a great track record as he brought all of the original eight Harry Potter adaptations to life and has worked with some of the biggest directors of our time from Quentin Tarantino on Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood to Greta Gerwig on Barbie. Heyman is currently working on the new Harry Potter TV series and another project together with Pascal.

Replacing the former producers with another male/female pair with amazing resumes is Amazon’s strategy to make the next 007 adventure bulletproof at the box office. This mix of British and American leadership is likely intentional to not only retain the essence of the character, but to appease the US tech giant. The big question that remains is whether the producers will also oversee any potential James Bond TV series.

UPDATE: A few days after the producers were brought on board, it was revealed that Jennifer Salke would be stepping down as Head of Amazon MGM Studios. The move was made to “flatten [Amazon’s] leadership structure” thereby eliminating her role entirely. This follows earlier reports that there was conflict between Jennifer Salke and former Bond producer Barbara Broccoli. Salke was also notably left out of Tuesday’s official press release.
